A curator at the Field Museum told me my trowel technique was 'digging like a backhoe' and it honestly fixed my whole dig
I was working a Roman site near Vindolanda last summer and after two weeks my finds were mostly broken pot sherds with no context, which I blamed on the site being disturbed. A curator visiting from the Field Museum in Chicago watched me for about ten minutes and said I was scraping in one direction and destroying the stratigraphy, so I switched to skimming in thin layers and suddenly started pulling whole coins and a bronze fibula with actual soil context. Turns out the site was never disturbed, I was just bad at it. Anyone else get a hard correction early on that totally changed how they work in the trench?
