Had a real 'oh no' moment with a delicate find last season in New Mexico

We were carefully clearing around what looked like a small ceramic pot (maybe 10 inches across) at a site near Santa Fe. My trowel slipped on a loose rock, and I nicked the rim, taking a tiny chip out of it. My heart just sank. I immediately stopped, flagged the spot, and called over our lead archaeologist. We documented the damage in the field notes with photos and a note about the exact time and tool. It was a good reminder that even when you're being careful, stuff can happen. Has anyone else had a small slip-up like that, and how did you handle the reporting process?

Yeah, that's the standard. We use a soft brush for the final pass, but you still need a trowel to clear the initial overburden.

Santa Fe crew uses a soft brush for that exact reason.
