Unpopular opinion: Your junk drawer might have archaeology in it
Cleaning out mine and found a button that dates to the Civil War. How do I even preserve this thing?

Yeah totally. Beyond just keeping it dry, you gotta think about materials touching it. Acid-free paper is key, not regular notebook paper. And never store it in a plastic baggie, that traps moisture. Honestly, call your local small history museum. They'll tell you exactly what to do for free.

It's wild how much history we're just sitting on, literally in our own houses (my grandma's attic was a time capsule of 1970s wallpaper samples). We treat these daily objects as clutter, but they're tiny pieces of a bigger story that got separated from its context. The good advice about calling a museum is key, because it turns a lone button back into a piece of shared history instead of just a cool find. It makes you wonder what other stories are tucked away in basements and drawers, totally disconnected from anyone who knows what they mean.

Honestly, it's wild to think about all the history tucked away in our homes. It's easy to toss things out without realizing they're part of a bigger story. Calling a museum really does change how you see those old items, like they're not just junk. Makes you wonder what stories we've lost because someone didn't know what they had. Idk, maybe we should all dig through our attics more often.
