I finally stopped over-lighting interviews after a client told me my footage looked like a hospital
I do corporate video work out in Tempe and for the past year I was lighting every interview with the same big soft box plus two fill panels because I thought flat and clean was what clients wanted. Back in March a marketing director watched the first cut and said, and I quote, "this looks like a hospital commercial, everyone's skin is the same shade of beige." That stung but she was right, there was zero shape on anyone's face and the background was as bright as the subject. I dropped down to one key light with a grid, killed the fill on the shadow side, and started letting the background fall off darker. My last three projects got approved with no lighting notes at all, which never happens. Now I'm second guessing whether I should add a subtle hair light or leave it totally natural, so what are you all doing for single person sit downs?
