That advice about shooting in 115 degree heat was right

Back in 2018, a guy named Marcus from Tempe told me to never book outdoor shoots in July, no matter what the client promised. I thought he was being dramatic, so I took a 3 hour gig at Papago Park anyway. My camera shut down twice from overheating, and we lost half the footage. Has anyone else had gear fail in the summer here, or do you have any tricks to keep things cool?

That Sundance shoot last month made me question 4K for Arizona work

We did a corporate piece outside Scottsdale last month, full 4K on everything like everyone says to do. But the final cut went to a tiny web player and a lobby screen, and honestly the 4K just meant bigger files and longer render times for nothing. I shot a similar job 3 years ago in 1080p on an older camera and the client was just as happy. Arizona sun blows out highlights no matter what resolution you pick, so why are we all carrying these heavy rigs? Am I missing something where 4K actually pays off for the average local gig, or is it just bragging rights at this point?

Ngl, we planned a sunset drone shot up near the Mogollon Rim last Tuesday and the clouds did everything but cooperate, we ended up reshooting the same 4 shots like 6 times. Anyone else deal with weather eating their whole schedule in northern AZ, or was it just me?

A drone crash at a Payson wedding shoot changed my whole backup plan

So last month I was covering a wedding ceremony up in Payson and the couple wanted this dramatic aerial shot of them walking out of the chapel. I sent my drone up, everything was going smooth, and then this random gust of wind just slammed it into a pine tree. The drone dropped straight into the parking lot and shattered the gimbal. The footage was on the SD card but the impact cracked the card reader slot, so I couldnt get the files out until I got home and pried the card out with a multitool. Meanwhile the bride was laughing but her mom was not, she kept saying what do you mean its stuck in the tree. I ended up having to use my backup camera for the rest of the shoot and I got lucky because the card survived. Has anyone else had a drone fail mid-job and how do you handle the awkward gap while you recover? I now always pre-fly the wind patterns around any venue before the actual ceremony, which probably sounds paranoid but it saved me last weekend near Fountain Hills.

Sedona lighting caught me off guard on a drone shoot last week

I flew over Bell Rock around 6pm last Thursday and the shadows were way deeper than anything I've seen in Phoenix. My footage came out half blown out even with ND filters, and I had to re-grade everything in Resolve just to salvage it. Does anyone else struggle with that red rock glare between 4 and 7 in the summer, or is it just my camera's sensor? I'm thinking of renting a VND with more stops next time, but I'm curious what you all shoot with up there.

That 117 degree shoot day in Phoenix nearly cooked my camera sensor

Sorry, that story was real, I am not making it up. I lost a full day of editing to that shoot because I had to rewatch every clip twice to check for heat damage and that was a week I already had zero buffer on a wedding edit. My backup plan now is to always book a shaded spot near a power outlet and I refuse to work with any crew that says we can just push through when its over 110. Does anyone else turn down jobs when the heat index passes a certain number or am I being too picky?

Lost an entire shoot day to a dead battery pack in Tucson

Last Tuesday I had a full day of interviews lined up at a warehouse near the airport. We got through the first setup fine, but when I went to swap batteries for the second location, my main V-mount pack just wouldn't turn on. Turns out it was a dud from a batch I bought 8 months ago, and I hadn't checked the charge indicator before leaving the studio. We lost about 3 hours waiting for a replacement to get delivered from a rental house. Now I carry a cheap multimeter in my camera bag and test every pack the night before a gig. Has anyone else had a battery brand that just randomly fails on you after a few months?

Spent $220 on a used carbon slider from a guy in Mesa last spring and honestly it saved my back on a Sonoran shoot. Pro tip: Watch the shade cloth setup at Papago Park before you book a shoot there

I was scouting a sunrise shoot near the boathouse last Tuesday and nearly lost my whole rig to a gust coming off the lake. The permanent shade structures over the picnic tables have frayed ropes and uneven tension, so they flap like crazy when the wind picks up around 7 AM. One of the poles is also sitting crooked, and the base plate is cracked, which is a serious hazard if you're placing a c-stand nearby. If you're planning a commercial or interview there, bring your own sandbags and ask the park office about the repair schedule before you pay for a permit. Has anyone else had gear knocked over by those things?

Sedona drone shoot got way too much static from locals

I flew a small drone over Cathedral Rock last Saturday for a wedding video. Three people came up to me before I even got the thing in the air. They said it ruins the quiet and the views. I get it, but the couple paid $1,800 for aerial footage. That spot is packed with hikers and cars anyway, it is not some untouched wilderness. I kept the flight to 15 minutes and stayed 200 feet up. Spent $180 on a fancy gimbal stabilizer I barely use now

Last summer I picked up that DJI RS 3 gimbal for shooting real estate walkthroughs in Scottsdale. Thought it would make my footage look super smooth and pro, you know? But after three months I realized I spend more time calibrating the stupid thing than actually filming. The balancing process is a pain (especially with my Sony A7 III) and half the time the motor just fights me. Ended up going back to handheld with a cheap $30 stabilization rig I built from PVC pipe. The footage looks almost the same honestly. Anyone else ditch their fancy gimbal for a simpler setup in Arizona heat?

Picked a gimbal over a slider last shoot day and I'm still second guessing it

Last week I had to choose between renting a Ronin gimbal or a Kessler slider for a client shoot out in Sedona (you know, those red rock views). The shoot was a real estate promo with some walking shots through a house and property. I went with the gimbal because I figured smooth motion around rooms would be easier handheld. And honestly it worked fine for the interiors, but then we got outside for that big canyon shot and I had no way to get that slow horizontal pan without buying a tripod head with fluid drag. The slider would have given me that buttery motion for the money shot, but the gimbal felt safer for the walkthroughs. Now the client wants a version 2 with more sweeping landscape shots and I'm kicking myself for not just getting both. Has anyone else had to pick between two tools on a shoot and ended up needing the other one the whole time?

Why does nobody talk about shooting in July in Arizona?

Last year I booked a desert shoot near Cave Creek for a music video, 110 degrees at 3pm. Camera overheated after 20 minutes, talent was miserable, and the ND filters were basically useless with that harsh sun. Whole shoot turned into a disaster. Now I only shoot outdoors between October and April. But some guys I know swear by morning golden hour even in summer. What's your take, do you push through the summer heat or just shut down outdoor shoots until fall? Any tricks for keeping gear cool?

The DSLR sunset shot in Flagstaff looked totally different on my monitor

Shot that golden hour scene at 6:20 PM with my old Canon Rebel, and the preview showed warm tones, but when I pulled it into Premiere Pro the whole thing turned flat and blue. What settings do you guys tweak so your camera screen matches what you actually get in the edit?

I was scoping out a spot near Cathedral Rock for a client shoot next month and called the ranger station to check. The lady on the phone said commercial permits jumped to $1,200 a day as of January. That's TRIPLE what it was two years ago. Anyone else run into this and find a workaround?

The day I lost a whole interview to a dead battery in Sedona

I was shooting a client testimonial up at a resort near Sedona, beautiful golden hour light, great setup. About 15 minutes in, my main camera just shut off. Dead battery, and I had left the spare back at the truck. I had to finish the whole thing on a GoPro I keep in my bag for B-roll, holding it by hand and praying the audio picked up. The client was patient, but I could tell they were nervous. The final cut actually turned out okay, but I will never pack a single battery again. Has anyone else had a shoot go sideways because of gear failure?
