City glow versus star glow: where do you stand?

I've noticed my night sky photos get worse as our city adds more lights. Some people argue it's needed for security, but others say it wastes energy and hides the stars. What's your opinion?

You mentioned how city lights "hide the stars," and that's a cultural loss we rarely talk about. For thousands of years, people used the stars for stories, navigation, and a sense of place. Losing that nightly view cuts us off from a shared human history.

Totally agree. Think about how the Milky Way guided travelers for centuries. Now, in cities, you're lucky to spot a few bright planets. We've lost that direct link to myths and maps that shaped whole civilizations.

Have you checked for any dark sky spots within an hour's drive? Even a little distance from city lights can make a huge difference. Getting a simple pair of astronomy binoculars is a cheap and easy way to start seeing more detail up there. It honestly feels like unlocking a secret layer of the world when you finally get a good view. That connection isn't totally lost, you just have to make a bit of an effort to find it now, and it's so worth it.
