My old paint guy said skip the sealer on that 2011 Civic bumper, and he was dead wrong
I had a guy named Ray who ran a shop over in Gary for 30 years talk me out of using sealer on a repainted front bumper last spring, said on that plastic it just traps solvent and you get lifting. So I sprayed base right over the sanded OEM finish like he told me, and about 4 months later the whole edge started peeling back around the fog light cutouts. Took it down to bare plastic, sealed it proper, and shot it again, and that one has held up through two Chicago winters now. Anybody else got a shortcut from an old-timer that cost you a redo?
Guess Ray never worked on a car that sat outside in the salt, because bare plastic soaks up whatever you put on it and that edge is the first spot to let go. Sealer is cheap insurance, and peeling a bumper twice costs a lot more than a quart of the stuff.
