Old timer told me to retap aluminum before paint, I shrugged it off

Guy with 30 years exp warned me last month about soft threads on a Chevy fender bracket, I thought he was being extra. Just had a bolt strip out mid-assembly and now I'm redoing the whole panel alignment. Anyone else skip retapping and regret it on aluminum parts?
