Rant: my check engine light was a loose gas cap for 3 months and I paid $110 to find that out
So back in March my check engine light popped on in my 2016 Corolla and I did what any normal person does, I panicked and ignored it for a bit. Then I started noticing my gas mileage was off, like I was filling up way more often, so I finally took it to a shop near my place in Dayton. The guy plugs in his scanner, charges me $110 for the diagnostic, and walks out holding my gas cap. Turns out the seal was dried out and cracked, so the whole evap system was throwing a code. A $9 gas cap from AutoZone fixed it and the light went off after I drove it around for a day. I felt like such an idiot for paying that much to learn something that simple. Now I check the cap every time I get gas and honestly the light hasn't come back since June. Has anyone else had a cheap fix trick them into thinking something major was busted?
