Serious question, did I waste $340 on a set of ramps and jack stands when my floor jack was fine?
I used to think my floor jack and two jack stands were all I needed for oil changes and brake jobs in my garage. Last month I bought a set of plastic ramps for $60 and a pair of 6 ton jack stands for $55, plus I finally got a real 3 ton low profile jack for $225 to replace the $40 one from a big box store. The cheap jack had been creeping down slowly for a year and I kept telling myself it was fine. When I slid under the car with the new setup, I realized the old jack was dropping about an inch every ten minutes. I could have been crushed doing a simple tire rotation in my own driveway. Now I want to know, how often do you guys replace your jack, and do you trust the cheap ones at all?
