Vent: I ran 40 psi in my tires for 3 years because a guy at a car show said it saves gas
I finally checked the door jamb sticker on my Corolla last month and it says 32 psi, not 40. Tires had been wearing bald down the center of the tread the whole time and I just kept blaming the alignment shop in Fresno. My gas mileage never even changed, so I was basically buying new tires early for nothing. Now I'm wondering how much other stuff I do just because some guy in a folding chair told me so. What's the worst car advice you picked up from someone who sounded like they knew what they were talking about?
My uncle swore by the old "warm up your engine for 10 minutes before driving" rule and I did that all through high school, burning gas and going nowhere. Same deal, he sat in a lawn chair at every family BBQ acting like he rebuilt carburetors for NASA. Turns out most car wisdom is just a guy repeating what his dad said in 1978.
