Three is actually a pattern I've noticed everywhere once you start looking for it. Like how good stories have a beginning, middle, and end, or how traffic lights work with red, yellow, green. For colors specifically, three shades gives you enough contrast for hierarchy without getting messy. I remember reading somewhere that the human brain naturally groups things in threes, so it makes sense that a trio of blues would feel more complete than two or four.

I had a similar headache matching a sage green for a client last year, and after way too many test prints, I found that dropping my yellow by just 4% did the trick.
