Thought torque wrenches were overkill for lug nuts, then a Tuesday at my shop in Akron changed my mind
Last Tuesday a guy came in with a front wheel that had walked off his own truck, and when I checked the rest of his lugs with a torque wrench, four of five were under 60 ft-lbs instead of the 100 they needed. I used to just hit lug nuts with the impact gun and call it good, but seeing that wheel sitting in his bed with a chewed-up hub made me rethink the whole thing. Now I torque every wheel by hand and check it again after 50 miles, and two customers this week already thanked me for the recheck. Honestly the impact gun is still faster but I'm not going back to guessing. What torque spec do you guys run for a half ton, because the old timer next door swears 110 and I'm running 100.
