Am I the only one who thinks chasing the newest test gear is a waste of a good bench?
Last week at our shop in Wichita I watched a newer guy turn down a solid used Fluke 8846A for $400 because it did not have a touchscreen and the newest app pairing. I have been on avionics benches for 16 years and I still reach for my old 8846A every single shift because it holds a cal and the readings do not wander when the hangar bay gets cold. Everybody online keeps pushing the shiny new boxes with color displays and cloud logging, but half of those features do nothing when you are chasing an intermittent in a pitot static system at 11pm. A meter only has to be stable and repeatable, and honestly the touchscreen units I have tried have slower boot times than my laptop. The basics of the trade never changed: read the schematic, verify the input, follow the signal. My concern with the new crowd is they trust the screen over the wire, and that is backwards. What older gear do you all refuse to retire, and what made you keep it?
