Dropped $340 on a fancy solder station and my old $40 iron did the same job
I got talked into buying a temperature controlled soldering station for $340 about 8 months ago because everyone on here kept saying you can't do good avionics work without one. Used it on a nav light harness job and honestly my joints looked the same as when I use my cheap 40 dollar Weller. The temp readout drifts about 30 degrees after it warms up, so I still have to feel it out by hand anyway. Ended up going back to the old iron for connector pins because I know exactly how it behaves. If you're just doing basic wiring and pin work, save your money and put it toward a good crimper instead. Anyone else think the temp controlled hype is way overblown for the kind of work we actually do?
