A ranger in Flagstaff asked me why I carry 12 pounds of "just in case" gear on a 3 day trip
She looked at my pack and asked if I was hiking the trail or moving to it, and it made me finally cut my base weight down to 19 pounds for the Humphrey's Peak loop. What's the one thing you refuse to leave behind even when you know it's dead weight?
Oh man I feel this. I used to haul a full first aid kit, a backup stove, and like three pairs of socks on every trip until my buddy weighed my pack and just laughed at me. What finally worked was doing a short overnight close to home and only bringing what I actually touched, then writing it down when I got back. Turns out I never once used the backup stove or half that kit, so those stayed home on the next real trip. Now I still bring one dumb thing though, a tiny camp chair, and yeah it's like a pound of dead weight but my back thanks me at the end of the day. Cutting the rest made room for it without killing my knees.
