Appreciation post: Taking the high ridge shortcut made my solo hike EPIC

Just got back from a three-day loop where everyone told me to stay on the valley floor. I decided to scramble up the rocky ridge instead, and the views were UNREAL. Saved hours and had the whole alpine zone to myself. People who skip these options are missing out on the BEST part of backpacking. Do your research and be willing to go off the beaten path.

How did you judge if the ridge was safe to scramble alone? I've been tempted to take high routes like that before but always worry about a twisted ankle with no one around. Did you have a bailout plan or just rely on your navigation skills? Those decisions can really make or break a solo trip.

That "twisted ankle with no one around" part is why your injury would also have to deal with the boredom.

What's your move for boredom (when you're stuck and hurt)?
