Compared my grandpa's old push mower to a new self-propelled one this spring

I borrowed my grandpa's 1987 Lawn-Boy push mower last month because my self-propelled Toro was in the shop. That old thing started on the second pull and cut through wet grass like nothing I've seen. The new mower has all these safety features and a bagger but bogs down if the grass is even a little damp. Has anyone else noticed older lawn equipment just seems to work better or am I romanticizing it?
