Hand dig vs. renting a mini excavator for a garage footer, which side are you on?

I used to hand dig every footer trench, took me 3 weekends and my back hated me for a month. Last year I rented a mini excavator for $250 for the day and finished in 6 hours, but the cleanup and grading took way longer than I expected. Anyone else make the switch and feel like the machine just trades one headache for another?

Whoa, $250 for a mini excavator rental?? That's insanely cheap, around here they're like $400 minimum before delivery fees. I'd have jumped on that deal too even with the cleanup hassle. But man, three weekends of hand digging sounds like pure misery, I bet you were eating ibuprofen like candy after that lol.
