Tried store-bought compost vs. homemade this spring and the difference was stark
I put a bag of that Miracle-Gro compost from Home Depot in one raised bed and my own pile from last fall in the other. The homemade stuff had worms, steam, and smelled like earth while the store bag was just dry clumps with no life. Tomato plants in the homemade bed are twice as tall after 6 weeks. Has anyone else noticed their own pile just works better no matter what brand you buy?

Did you do any sifting on your homemade pile before using it? Curious if the larger chunks or sticks matter to tomato growth compared to the fine store stuff. Also wondering if your homemade bed drains better or holds moisture different.

My homemade pile still had some twigs in it and the tomatoes went crazy, so I honestly don't think it matters much.
