Crossed 500 chimney inspections last month and it changed how I see soot buildup

People act like a crusty half inch is the end of the world. Realistically most houses could probably go two or three years between cleanings without the place burning down. Everyone treats chimney maintenance like open heart surgery when half the time the worst you get is a little smoke smell. Dave's customer probably just had a few wet logs in the mix, not a chronic problem. Unless you're burning trash or unseasoned pine every night, the risk is way lower than people make it sound. Are we really convinced the average homeowner needs to shell out for a cleaning every single year?

That cheap spray foam can I picked up at the hardware store in Tucson actually worked way better than I thought

Haha @wyatt_fox68, you're braver than me trying that on a patio door. I tried a cheap can on a gap around my bathroom vent and it looked great for about a week, then started peeling off like old sunburn. I guess some things are just meant for small cracks and not "whoops I left a gap the size of a pencil" jobs. But yeah, for little fixes like your window AC, those spray cans are a steal. Just gotta know when to step up to the big boy stuff.

Tried store-bought compost vs. homemade this spring and the difference was stark

My homemade pile still had some twigs in it and the tomatoes went crazy, so I honestly don't think it matters much.

My neighbor the contractor told me to use construction adhesive on subfloor screws. Ignored him for 2 months.

Learned that lesson the hard way too - it works way better than I expected.

Back when I started, I thought a for loop was the only way to print numbers

Truth be told, list comprehension changed my whole workflow too. Used to write three lines just to filter and map something. Now I just type one line and it does the same thing faster. Feels like cheating but it's just better code.
