Switched from a heat gun to a cheap hair dryer on leatherette, wish I'd done it 4 years ago
For years I stripped leatherette covers with a heat gun on low, and I was always fighting it, melting a spot or lifting the grain on a Canon A-1 body. Last week I dug out my wife's old 1875 watt hair dryer (she got a new one) and tried it on a Pentax K1000 I picked up at an estate sale in Fresno for $30. Held it about 4 inches away for 30 seconds and the glue let go clean with zero scorch marks. The heat gun hits around 600 degrees even on low, the hair dryer tops out way cooler, so the vinyl stays soft instead of bubbling. It's slower, maybe twice the time per panel, but I'm not sanding out burn spots anymore. Has anyone tried the same trick on grip rubber, or does that need a different approach?
