Warning: found a red wasp nest the size of a basketball in my mower bag last Thursday
Last Thursday I went to dump the grass catcher on my riding mower and felt something fuzzy brush my forearm. I looked down and there was a red wasp nest the size of a basketball packed right under the lid, and they were NOT happy. I got stung 4 times before I made it to the garage, and one sting on my neck swelled up so bad I almost drove to urgent care in Springfield. Turns out I had mowed over their ground nest near the fence line the week before and they just moved right into my equipment. Now I thump every bag and tilt the deck before I start it, no matter how dumb I look doing it. If you park your mower outside or near a shed, check inside the bag chute and under the hood this week. Has anyone else had them move into a mower or grill like that?

Plenty of folks leave mowers and grills outside for years and never get a single wasp, so calling it a warning feels like a stretch. My dad's old push mower sat under a tarp for a decade and the worst thing in the bag was wet clippings. Wasps pick dark, dry, tucked away spots, and a mower bag that gets emptied every few days isn't exactly prime real estate. Four stings and a swelled neck sounds rough, but that's bad luck more than a rule the rest of us need to live by. Thumping and tilting every single time you start up sounds like a lot of work for something that happens to maybe one guy in a hundred.
