Built a 10x12 shed studio in my backyard and the $140 I spent on a second-hand solid core door was the best money of the build
I spent about 3 grand turning the back corner of my yard into a small recording and hangout shed, 10 by 12, framed it myself over two weekends in March. The problem was noise. My neighbor runs a mower at 7am and I could hear every pass right through the wall. I tried foam panels first, then a rug on the wall, then stuffing towels in the gaps around the door, and none of it did much. What finally worked was swapping the cheap hollow door for a solid core one I grabbed off a marketplace listing for $140, plus a $20 pack of weather strip and a door sweep. The mass is what kills the sound, not the foam. It cut the mower noise down to almost nothing and my vocals stopped picking up the outside. If you are building a backyard studio and blowing your budget on acoustic panels, try a heavy door and seal the gaps before you buy anything else. Anyone here gone with a double door setup instead, and did it beat a single solid slab?
