My uncle's advice about studio foam was totally off

My uncle told me to line the whole shed with those cheap egg crate foam pads from the craft store, said it would solve all my echo problems. Spent 3 weekends stapling it up in my 8x10 backyard studio and it sounded like I was recording inside a pillowcase, everything was muffled and dead. Turns out I needed bass traps in the corners and proper panels at ear level, not a full foam blanket. Anyone else get handed bad acoustic advice from a well meaning relative and end up stripping it all off?

My buddy Rick did the same thing in his garage with those foam squares, then tried to fix it by adding more layers because he figured thicker meant better. Ended up with a room that sounded like a library full of wet blankets, and he ripped it all down after a month. Last I heard he was just recording in his closet with a blanket over his head, which honestly works way better than half the stuff we buy.
