The day a spotter saved my load swing

I spent 5 years thinking I could eyeball every pick solo, but last Tuesday a spotter on a job in Portland shouted at me to take my time with the boom angle. He was right, I had been swinging loads too fast and nearly hit a parked truck. Anyone else been humbled by a spotter pointing out something you thought you had down?

My sourdough starter died after I left it in the fridge for 3 weeks on vacation

I went to visit my sister in Portland for 3 weeks and thought my starter would be fine just sitting in the fridge (big mistake, I know). Came back to a thick layer of weird gray liquid on top and a smell like old nail polish remover, so I had to toss the whole thing. Has anyone else killed a starter this way, or do you have a trick for keeping them alive when you're gone for a while?

Noticed a weird thing at a print shop in Austin

Was picking up some business cards at this little shop off South Congress and saw they use a loupe to check every single sheet for registration marks. Handing a 10x magnifier to a press operator is like giving a mechanic a stethoscope. Anybody else's shop do QC checks like that or is it just the bougie places?

Realized I was overthinking my workbench design for years

I spent months planning this big workbench with all these fancy features like a built-in vice and storage drawers. Last weekend my neighbor shows me his beat up 2x4 bench he built in an afternoon. He just threw some plywood on top and called it done. I watched him build a bookshelf on it and it worked perfectly. All that time I spent planning could have been spent just building stuff. Has anyone else caught themselves making a simple project way harder than it needed to be?

Tried that 'no paste' binding method I saw on YouTube and my book fell apart in 3 days

I figured I'd save some time on a quick paperback repair, you know, a little test run. Watched this guy who swore by just using glue on the spine directly, no paste for the endpapers or anything. Sounded too good to be true (and it was). By day three the text block just slid right out of the covers. I'm out a nice cover board and a weekend afternoon. Has anyone else fallen for one of those 'shortcut' binding tricks that just don't hold up?

Had to choose between pure CSS and SVG for a clock face animation

Wanted a ticking second hand. Pure CSS was cleaner code. Only 15 lines. But the rotation math for 60 ticks got brutal. SVG path data looked messy but the timing was dead simple. Went with SVG in the end. Took longer to write but the animation was butter smooth. Anyone else hit this wall and pick the uglier solution?

I finally saw the difference after 3 seasons of letting my siding weather

Bought a house in Portland 2 years ago with brand new cedar shingles. The first 6 months I was stressed about the bright honey color fading. But by last fall the gray patina had settled in and it looked like it belonged in the neighborhood. Now I see why old timers say wait it out before you stain or paint anything. Has anyone else here let natural materials age on purpose or do you prefer to seal them right away?

My load line got tangled 80 feet up during a job in Portland

I was working a tower crane job downtown Portland last Tuesday, lifting steel beams for a 12 story building. The wind kicked up pretty bad around 3pm and my load line twisted into a nasty birdcage about 80 feet up. I had to stop everything and lower the hook real slow, letting the cable spin itself out. Took me nearly 45 minutes to get it sorted and I lost half the afternoon. Has anyone else dealt with a birdcage on a windy day? What did you do to fix it?

My neighbor Marie told me my kimchi was too wet, so I changed everything

She's been making kimchi for 40 years and took one look at my jars and said 'you're drowning the cabbage, honey.' Turns out I wasn't salting long enough or squeezing hard enough before packing the jars. Now I let the salted cabbage sit for a full 3 hours and really press out the moisture before adding the paste. The texture is way better and I don't get that watery layer on top anymore. Has anyone else had to adjust their salting time based on someone's random kitchen visit?

Switched from CMYK to spot colors for a 3-color logo job and wow what a difference

I've been doing screen printing for about 2 years now, mostly just side gigs for friends. Last month I had a client in Denver who wanted their logo on 50 hoodies. The logo had this specific teal that just would not come out right with CMYK. I spent like 3 hours tweaking separations and it still looked washed out. Finally talked to the guy at my local supply shop and he told me to try spot colors. Mixed up a custom PMS 321 and ran a test print. The color was dead on first try. Plus the registration was way easier with just 3 screens instead of 4. I honestly thought spot colors were just for really simple stuff but now I get why the pros use them. Has anyone else had a similar switch that made your life way easier?
