Rant: the $380 acoustic panels I hung wrong, my mix sounded worse

I got cheap and mounted four 2x4 panels flat against the wall corners in my 12x10 shed studio. Paid $380 total and thought I was being smart, but the bass just got muddier and my highs disappeared. Turns out you need air gaps and proper corner placement, which I only learned after recording three vocals that sounded like they were in a closet. Anyone else burn cash on treatment that made things worse before you figured it out?
