Saw a guy in Austin convert a 10x12 shed into a studio with $600 and a window AC unit
The whole thing was 2x4 walls, one layer of drywall, and a cheap rug, and it sounded better than my buddy's $8k treated room, so is acoustic foam just a scam for backyard guys like us?

Cheap foam gets a bad rap because people slap it on the walls and expect magic. It only kills the high stuff, so you end up with a dead sounding room that still booms in the low end. That shed probably worked because the drywall and 2x4 walls flex and soak up low end, plus a rug and whatever junk was in there broke up the flutter. Corner bass traps and a thick rug do way more than a wall of $2 squares. Get your speakers off the desk and away from the wall, throw a couch or mattress in the corner, and you'll beat half the "treated" rooms out there.
4
