That mixer feedback in my shed studio changed my monitor placement

I've been tracking vocals in my 8x10 backyard shed for about 2 years now, and last month a buddy who does live sound came by to check my setup. He stood right where I sit when I mix and said, "You're basically sitting in a bass trap, man." I had my monitors shoved against the back wall, which I thought gave me more desk space, but he pointed out the low end was all smeared by the corner reflections. So I pulled the desk 3 feet forward and angled the monitors so they point right at my ears, not just straight ahead. First mix I did after that, the kick drum actually sounded like a kick drum instead of a thud, and the snare had that crack I was chasing for months. It took maybe 20 minutes to rearrange, zero cost, and now I'm questioning everything else, like my acoustic foam placement. Has anyone else had a friend come over and point out something that obvious that you totally missed?
