Man, I have to disagree on this one. Paper proofs are great for sure, but you don't have to pick one or the other, and ditching soft proofing means you're flying blind before you even lay down ink. Your whole problem was your room light being warmer than you thought, which is a cheap fix with a viewing booth or even just a neutral lamp next to the monitor. Fix the light, keep the screen, and still do the test sheet, then you get both checks instead of throwing one away.

Try a hybrid approach. Keep the tablet for points and context sheets but make yourself sketch the section by hand first, then shoot it. I did that on a dig in York last season and it changed everything. You still get the speed of the GIS for the archive, but your hand is on the paper noticing where the clay turns to silt because the pencil catches. Another trick is to set the trowel down every 10cm and just stare at the wall before you shoot anything. Sounds dumb but it works.
