Found out our mobile checkout button was 32px tall for 8 months, then a tap test in Tulsa ruined my day
I was reading through a usability report last month and saw that the average fingertip tap target is 9mm, which comes out to roughly 34 CSS pixels. I pulled up our own checkout page in the dev tools and our main CTA was sitting at 32px tall with zero padding around it. We shipped that thing 8 months ago and our mobile cart drop-off sat at 61% the whole time, which we all wrote off as normal. My own mom tried to buy a gift from us on her phone at Thanksgiving and gave up after three tries, and I still didn't put it together. I bumped it to 48px last Tuesday with real spacing and drop-off fell to 44% in two days flat. How many other spots in our app are quietly failing that same rule and we are blaming the user for it?
