For two years I told everyone ear protection was a scam and a good playlist was all you needed in a loud shop. Then my crew got sent to a pump station retrofit outside Council Bluffs and the hum from the VFDs drilled into my skull for six straight days. I caved and grabbed a $90 pair at a truck stop, mostly because the wiring diagram I was tracing started looking like spaghetti. By hour two I could actually hear the contactor chatter I was supposed to be listening for, stuff I had been drowning out with music for years. So yeah, I was wrong, and now the cheap pair lives in my bag next to my meter. Anyone else pick up a tool for the wrong reason and end up relying on it?
