Had to choose between two terrible font pairings for a client yesterday

They wanted a modern but professional look for their bakery menu, so it was either Comic Sans with Papyrus or a scratchy handwritten font with a slab serif. I went with the slab serif and handwritten combo, and now I'm getting complaints it looks like a ransom note. Has anyone else been stuck picking between two bad options and just had to guess?

Read an article saying slab serifs are basically just shouting in font form.

My design professor had us do an exercise where we paired slab serifs with delicate script fonts to prove they don't have to scream - it totally changed how I see them.
