Am I the only one who painted a north-facing room a dark color and it actually got brighter?

Flat finish? No way, that would be a disaster in a dark room. You need something with a tiny bit of sheen to move the light around, even if it's just eggshell. A totally matte wall just drinks up all the light and makes it feel like a cave.

Saw something wild at the county fair in Springfield last weekend

Yeah I read that ignoring early signs can make things way worse later.

Hot take: I thought hiring a sales guy was a waste of money until I saw the numbers from the first quarter.

Seriously, my buddy did this exact thing for his small cafe. He hired a college kid just to chat with regulars and remember their orders. Within a month, repeat visits shot up like crazy. He showed me the numbers and I was shocked. It felt silly at first, but that simple human touch built way more loyalty than any ad.

I used to track every single penny in a notebook, now I just check one app on Sundays

Totally get what you mean about seeing the total being scarier. I did the notebook thing for a while too and it just made me focus on tiny stuff that didn't matter. Switching to a weekly check on an app gave me the big picture shock I needed. It stops you from kidding yourself about where the money goes. That 15% drop makes perfect sense.

Update: The new library sign in my town is a branding mess

You ever see a sign that looks like it was designed by a committee where everyone got to pick one element? My local rec center has a logo that's half a leaf, half a basketball, in three clashing colors. The font looks like it's from a western movie. It's so busy trying to be everything that it just ends up looking like a confusing clipart collage. I feel like they spent all the budget on a fancy 3D render and then printed it on the cheapest vinyl banner.
