Pro tip: the gas pump at my local station has a sticker that covers the actual octane numbers, and I only noticed after 11 fill-ups
There is a Shell on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie where someone slapped a promo sticker right over the 87/89/93 labels about two months ago. I have been pressing the top button assuming it was premium this whole time because the sticker made the middle button look like the top one. Last week the attendant told me the layout runs bottom to top, so I have been paying for 87 and thinking I was getting 93. Anyone else got a gas station near them that redesigned the pump into a guessing game?

The "redesigned the pump into a guessing game" part got me, because my buddy Dave did the exact same thing at a Citgo off 44. He swore the top button was 93 for almost three months, turns out the buttons ran left to right instead of top to bottom, so he was running 87 the whole time in his turbo Jetta. The kicker is it started knocking on the highway and he blamed the dealer for weeks before the mechanic popped the hood and just pointed at the sticker. He sold it not long after, said he couldn't trust himself at a pump anymore.
