Vent: Bought a 'smart' trash can that cost me $60 and a weekend
I saw this automatic lid trash can online that was supposed to open with a wave of your hand. It worked fine for a week, then the sensor started opening whenever I walked past it, even from across the room. I spent all Saturday trying to recalibrate it with the awful app, which just made it open and close randomly. Ended up taking the batteries out and now it's just a heavy, overpriced bin. Has anyone else had a gadget turn into a total nuisance like this?

Ugh, I feel this so hard. I used to be totally into those smart home gadgets, thought they were the future. But my "smart" light bulbs did the same kind of thing, just turning on by themselves at 3 AM. It completely changed my mind. Now I see most of that stuff as just more things that can break in annoying ways. Your trash can story is the perfect example of a solution looking for a problem.

That's the real cost people don't talk about, the mental energy of troubleshooting this junk. @the_jenny is right, it's a solution hunting for a problem, and now you're the one solving the new problems it creates. The future is just more stuff to manage.
