I called the gray placeholder text in forms "good design" for 8 years, then my uncle tried to buy a fishing license
My uncle is 71 and tried to get a fishing license on a state site two weeks ago, and he typed his address into the search bar because the search bar looked exactly like the blank address box below it: same size, same border, same gray hint text. I used to argue that faded placeholder text was clean and modern, but watching him tap the wrong box four times made me admit that low contrast hints are just a lie you tell users right before they mess up. How many of you have seen someone enter their name in a search bar like it's a normal text box, and did the site ever fix it?
