My thermostat had a 'smart' update and now I can't turn on heat at 6am

The old dial on my basement unit in Denver worked fine for 7 years, one twist and you're done, but the new touchscreen app keeps hiding the schedule behind 3 menus and it reset itself to eco mode twice last week. Has anyone else had a 'smart' upgrade make a basic task take 10 times as long, and what did you switch to?
