That coffee shop in Portland had the weirdest logo layout

I was grabbing a latte at this place called Common Grounds on SE Division and their menu board used this giant serif font that was impossible to read from 3 feet away. The whole design felt like they tried to cram three different styles into one sign and it gave me a headache. How do you convince someone their layout needs to breathe without sounding like a jerk?

Overheard a homeowner say 'the alarm guy just drills holes anywhere' and it stuck with me

I was at a hardware store in Austin last Saturday grabbing anchors for a panel install. This older guy was complaining to the clerk about his old alarm system, said something like 'they just drill holes anywhere and call it done.' Hit me hard because I've definitely been guilty of that on tough jobs after a long day. Now I'm taking an extra 2 minutes to map out wire paths and mount spots before I touch the drill. Has anyone else had a customer say something that made you rethink your process?

Warning: That $60 hardcover omnibus fell apart after one read

Bought the Absolute Edition of a classic run last month. Opened it carefully. By page 50 the binding cracked. Pages started falling out by issue 3. I babied it. Not like I was bending it backwards. Contacted the publisher. They offered me a 20% discount on my next order. So basically nothing. Anyone else had binding issues with those premium editions?

I finally snapped a chain on a group ride last Sunday

Was out with 12 riders on the usual 40 mile loop through the hills. Everything felt fine until that one hard shift going up a steep pitch. Chain snapped right at the quick link. Took out my rear derailleur too. Had to call my wife to come pick me up in her SUV. Felt like an idiot standing there with a twisted mess of metal. Got home and realized my quick link had 3,000 miles on it. Should have replaced it way sooner. Anyone else forget to swap those out until it's too late?

Watched my coworker use an AI voice agent for 10 minutes and it handled 3 angry callers back to back

Last Thursday at our office in Austin, our support lead tested this new AI phone agent thing. Three customers called in mad about late shipments. The bot apologized, checked tracking, and offered resolutions. Not once did it say "I understand your frustration" in that fake way. The third caller even thanked it. My boss is now talking about replacing 2 of our remote reps with this. Has anyone else seen these voice AIs actually work in real customer service?

Procreate crashed during a 6 hour portrait commission - should I save more often or trust autosave?

I was at a coffee shop in Portland working on a digital portrait for a client who paid $200 upfront. About 5 hours in, Procreate suddenly froze and then just closed itself. I reopened it expecting the autosave to have everything but it only had layers from the first 20 minutes. Ended up redoing the whole thing from scratch in 3 hours and the client never knew, but now I'm paranoid about saving every 10 minutes. Does anyone else manually save as PSD every 30 minutes even if the app says it autosaves?

I swapped my app's color scheme to high contrast black and white last week thinking it would help visually impaired users. Turned out the harsh white on black triggered headaches in about 15% of testers within minutes. How do you balance accessibility needs for different groups when they conflict like this?

Hot take: I used to think eurogames were boring, one game of Brass Birmingham changed that

For years I brushed off heavy eurogames as spreadsheets with dice. Then a friend forced me into a 4 hour game of Brass Birmingham last weekend. Watching the canal network grow and shift based on everyone's coal and iron needs finally clicked for me. The tension of someone dropping a beer on your planned route was way more engaging than I expected. Has anyone else had a game completely flip their opinion on a whole genre?

That small bakery client paid me with baked goods for a month

I picked up a rebrand project for a local bakery in Austin called Sweet Rise back in March. They seemed nice enough at first, really enthusiastic about getting a fresh look. After the first round of revisions, the owner said cash was tight and asked if I'd take store credit instead. I figured sure, free pastries for a month sounded fine, but after week two they kept pushing for more changes with no end in sight. I ended up with 15 boxes of croissants that I couldn't even give away fast enough. Has anyone else gotten stuck with barter deals that just dragged on forever?

Used to think wrapping brisket in foil was cheating, then I tried it on a 14 pounder

I was always a butcher paper guy, but my smoker ran out of fuel overnight and I had to save the cook. Throwing it in foil with some tallow at 165 brought the bark back and it finished in 2 hours. Anyone else find foil works better when you're in a time crunch?
