G74 peck drilling debate: full retract every peck or chip break only? Watched a tap snap in Rockford last Tuesday
Honestly I was running a batch of 304 stainless plates on the old Haas last Tuesday in Rockford and heard a tap pop on hole 11 of 40. The operator before me had it set to chip break only, no full retract, and the flutes packed up with stringy chips until the torque spiked and the tap sheared off flush. I pulled the fixture, backed the tap out with a pick, and lost about 90 minutes plus a $38 tap. Then I switched that program to full retract on every peck and it drilled the rest of the batch clean, though it added maybe 15 percent cycle time. So now I'm stuck on this: is full retract the safe bet every time, or am I just burning cycle time on soft stuff where chip break alone is fine? Tbh I think it depends on the material and how deep you're going, but I want to hear what the rest of you do. Ngl part of me thinks the old guy who set it up was right and I overreacted. Has anyone here run chip break only in stainless and actually had it hold up over a long run?
