My aunt's comment about my dry cake changed everything
So last Thanksgiving my aunt took one bite of my chocolate cake and said "honey this is drier than the Mojave desert" right at the table lol. I was so embarrassed but she showed me how to use a simple syrup soak on each layer before frosting. Has anyone else had a relative give you brutal but helpful baking feedback?

and honestly that's the kind of tough love we all need sometimes lol. my mom once told me my banana bread tasted like "cardboard with frosting" and i was so mad for a week but she was right. i was using way too much flour and overmixing the batter until it got rubbery. she showed me to fold the dry ingredients in gently and to trust the recipe instead of adding extra flour if the batter looked wet. now i'm the one in the family known for making really moist quick breads and it all started from her being brutally honest that day. sometimes you gotta take the hit to actually get better at something.

Oh man, did your aunt actually say that out loud? My grandma once told me my pecan pie had "more moisture in a saltine cracker" and then walked me through dropping a shot of bourbon into the filling. It stung at first but honestly that one tip made me stop overbaking everything and now I actually pay attention to texture instead of just guessing.
