Office baking contests: team building or unnecessary stress?

My company just had a holiday baking competition. Some teams had wins with fancy decorated cakes that impressed everyone. Other groups had fails like soggy bottoms or burnt edges, which caused embarrassment. Do these events actually bring people together or just add pressure? I'd love to hear what you all think.

Those fancy cakes that won, were they actually made by the team or just one person with skills. What were the judges looking for, taste or looks. If a team had a fail, did others help them or just watch them get embarrassed. Feels like the rules decide if it's fun or just another way to rank people.

One thing that gets missed is how the clock changes everything. In those bake-offs, even if a star baker carries the team, the time limit can make or break the whole group. I saw a show where a team fell behind, and instead of helping, others just focused on their own tasks to save face. Judges might say they want taste, but under pressure, a flashy cake that's just okay often wins over a simple tasty one. So the rules aren't just about ranking. They create a mood where saving your own skin comes first.

Ever see a team totally crack under the clock? My friend's group had a star baker, but when time got low, everyone just guarded their own bakes instead of pitching in!
