Spent 2 hours sifting flour for biscuits before my grandma asked why I was doing it at all
Turns out the recipe card from my mom never said sifted flour, I just assumed it did for like 3 years, so has anyone else been adding a whole extra step to a recipe that was never there?
My mom's banana bread recipe card has this tiny note in the corner that says "beat 50 strokes" and I did that by hand with a wooden spoon for years before my sister told me mom only wrote that down as a joke for my dad who always overmixed stuff. So yeah, wasted effort runs in the family I guess. What gets me about your story is the 3 years part, because nobody ever corrected you and the biscuits still came out fine, right? That makes me wonder if sifting even does anything at all or if it was just one of those old kitchen rules people passed down with no real reason behind it. Did your grandma actually say it changes the texture, or did she just look at you like you were nuts for standing there with a sifter? I keep going back and forth on whether these extra steps are worth keeping or if we should all just toss the sifter in the trash.
