Had a kid's cut go south in under a minute yesterday

I was in my chair in Portland, doing a simple trim on a 7 year old. The kid jerked his head right as I was lining up his sideburn with my trimmer. Took a nick out of his ear, not deep but it bled. I stayed calm, got the styptic pencil on it fast, and talked to the parents right away. Anyone else have a good way to keep a squirmy kid still without making them scared?

Man, that's the worst feeling. You handled it perfectly though, getting the bleeding stopped and telling the parents right away. For wiggly kids, I sometimes let them hold a comb or a spray bottle, gives their hands something to do.

Yo that spray bottle trick is genius. Does it actually work or do they just start spraying everything in sight? My cousin's kid would 100% try to water the barber's mirror with it. What do you even put in there, just plain water?

Honestly, letting them hold a comb is a solid idea. Tbh I tried that once and the kid just started combing my arm hair instead.
