Just realized why so many new barbers quit at month 6 (it's not the money)
Was talking with a guy I mentored at my shop here in Tulsa. He made it 5 months and walked. Said he could not handle the quiet. Not slow days, the quiet. The 25 minutes of small talk with a guy who does not want to talk and does not want silence either.
Here is what I keep seeing. New barbers learn the cuts fine. What nobody teaches them is how to sit in that chair and just work while two people say nothing and it is not weird. I have been behind the chair 11 years and some of my best clients barely talk. A guy named Ray has sat in my chair every 3 weeks for 6 years. We might say 10 words total.
So when you are training someone, do not just watch their fade. Watch how they handle the silence. If it makes them nervous they start over talking and the client feels it. The cut gets rushed too.
How do you all break in new hires on this part? Do you just throw them in and let them figure it out or do you actually talk about it?
Ever notice how the nervous talkers can't stand a quiet room for even two minutes? I had a guy like Ray too, old farmer, we'd go whole cuts with just the clippers humming and it was perfect. Honestly the best thing I did for new hires was just let them sit through it a few times so they learn quiet is normal, not something to fix.
