Talked to a old barber at a swap meet who changed how I hold my clippers
He saw me cutting a mannequin head and told me I was gripping the clippers like a hammer, not a pencil. I tried his way with just my thumb and first two fingers for a whole haircut and my hand didnt cramp up for the first time in 6 months. Anyone else get told theyre holding their tools wrong by some random veteran?

Grip like a pencil works better for fine work, but that hammer grip has its place for bulk removal.

@veraramirez nailed it but Im wondering - when you switch between grips how long does it take you to get back into the groove? I find if I try to do the pencil grip for a couple minutes then go back to hammer grip I lose all my momentum and have to start over basically. Is that just a me problem or do you adjust on the fly? Also do you do the pencil grip just with your fingers or rest your wrist on something for stability?
