Unpopular opinion: the 15 minute neck trim upsell is killing walk in trust
A guy in line at my shop in Tampa said he stopped coming to his old barber because they pushed a $10 neck shave every single visit and he felt like a wallet, not a client. I started asking "want the neck cleaned up?" instead of telling people it was needed, and my rebook rate actually went up. Do you upsell extras at the chair or just let folks ask?
The part about him feeling like a wallet instead of a client really hits. I had the same thing happen at my shop, guys would sit down already tensed up waiting for the pitch. What fixed it for me was just not bringing it up at all unless they asked or unless I could see hair actually on their collar. Funny thing is once I stopped pushing, the same guys started asking for it on their own after a few visits. Turns it into their idea instead of mine, and nobody walks out feeling nickel and dimed.
