Cable housing cutter vs just using my side cutters for 15 years

I finally broke down and bought a proper Park Tool cable cutter last month after using my basic side cutters since I started working on bikes in 2012. The difference is wild - my housing cuts are actually clean now instead of that crushed look I always got before. No more filing down the ends or getting frayed cables stuck in the ferrule. I still grab the old side cutters for quick jobs though. Anyone else hold out on tools way longer than they should?

I read somewhere that the crushed housing ends from cheap cutters can actually mess up shifting performance more than people realize, something about the cable not seating right inside the ferrule. I got by with side cutters for close to ten years before finally caving, and yeah the clean cuts from a proper tool make a noticeable difference. Still, I think most of us keep using what we have until it really annoys us enough to change. For quick stuff on the trail or cutting zip ties, the old side cutters are fine.

Did you keep the old cutters for anything specific or just for emergency use?

Oh, I kept mine for years as backups in the garage. They came in handy more than once when the main pair was being used for something else. Eventually I gave them away to a neighbor who needed basic tools, which felt better than just letting them gather dust.
