In that first episode, everyone's so hung up on the sudden departure that they forget the people left behind are still dealing with normal stuff like divorce and job loss. Once you get past episode 3, the whole show flips into showing how grief makes people act crazy in ways that have nothing to do with the big event. It's like the show is secretly about how we all handle pain differently, and the departure is just a backdrop for that. Your mileage may vary, but that's what hooked me.
