Grayscale test after a chat with a colorblind friend

My buddy in Austin who's colorblind said my dark theme looked muddy to him, so I flipped the whole UI to grayscale in Figma. Turns out my contrast hierarchy was way off, pure black text on near black cards. Has anyone else tried this to catch luminance issues before shipping?

Old school hex codes vs CSS variables for dark themes

I used to hardcode every dark mode shade with hex values like #1a1a2e for backgrounds and #16213e for panels, but after a 60 page redesign last fall I switched everything to CSS custom properties. The change happened when I realized I was updating the same navy blue across 14 different files just to fix a contrast issue on mobile. Now I define a palette in one place and use semantic names like - bg-surface or - text-muted, which feels SO much easier to maintain. Is that just a crutch for lazy devs, or is there a real downside to relying on variables instead of locking in the exact values first?

Rebuilt my portfolio over the weekend and tested pure #000 against a layered gray palette on the same layout. The solid black made everything look crushed and harsh, but the grays kept depth without feeling washed out. Am I missing something, or do you all avoid true black in your dark themes too?

Blue light filters vs pure black backgrounds, still split after that conference in Austin

Went to that design conference in Austin last month and two speakers straight up contradicted each other. One guy showed studies saying pure black (#000) causes more eye strain because of the extreme contrast, and the other showed a demo where his app's battery life tanked 15% without true black on OLED. I run my own moving company site at night and always used dark gray backgrounds (#121212). But after seeing both presentations I've been flipping back and forth. Half the comments section on here swears by blue light filter settings, the other half says just use warm dim lighting. Does anyone else feel like the science is all over the place on this? What's your default for body text on dark backgrounds, pure black or a shade of gray? Curious if anyone's actually tested this with their own users instead of just reading the same 2019 articles.

That moment in the parking lot when I saw my app in daylight

I was sitting in my car at the Target on 42nd Street around 4pm last Tuesday, checking my own dark theme on my phone. The sunlight hit the screen and I couldn't read a single button, all that gray-on-gray text just vanished. It hit me that I only ever tested in my office with the blinds closed, so I never saw how weak my #2a2a2a background was under real glare. Pure black vs dark gray, which one actually hurts your eyes after 3 hours?

I was tweaking a client's dashboard last week at like 11pm, switched everything to #000000 because they demanded it, and after about 3 hours my eyes felt like sandpaper. Last Tuesday in Austin I delivered a dark theme with #0D0D0D backgrounds, thought it looked sleek on my OLED monitor. Client came back saying it was 'muddy' and demanded pure #000000 everywhere. Had a project for a local bakery in Austin about 3 weeks ago. They wanted a dark theme for their order app, insisted on #000000 black backgrounds.
